Eternal Silence, the ambitious Half-Life 2 space mod, has reached completion. With the release of Beta 2.3 on March 1st, the ES Team has a showing they've deemed the last version of their second beta, bug-free and worthy of displaying at the Independent Games Festival at the Game Developers Conference this March in San Francisco.
Eternal Silence's first release grabbed the Best Multiplayer FPS Mod award for the event, beating out dozens of competing mods from Half-Life 2 and other games. After winning, Eternal Silence received more polish, bug fixes, new features and new content as part of the next stage of the project, dubbed Beta 2. The mod will go on to duke it out against the winners of other categories for the title of "Best Mod of 2006" and a $5,000 cash prize.
"We're pleased with how far it's come, whether we win Best Mod or not. After all, best multiplayer FPS was a very competitive category." said Dan Menard, the project lead. "Ultimately, though, we're making this for the players, not for the awards."
Five members of the Eternal Silence team will be at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco to show off their work.
Fight on foot, fight in space:
Eternal Silence pits two capital ships against each other in the depths of space. Players must use a variety of weapons to defeat the other team in a domination-style gameplay environment. Flamethrowers, assault rifles, ion cannons are among the infantry weapons, with even more combat possibilities occurring in the space side of the game, where fighters, interceptors and heavy fighters compete for space supremacy.
